According to legend, Saint Rumoldus, the patron saint of Mechelen, was murdered around the year 770. In the Hombeek forests near Mechelen, he had a small church built. He paid the workers a fair wage, which sparked rumors about his wealth. During an evening walk, he was ambushed, murdered, and thrown into the river, named "Dijle". A few days later, a light above the water revealed his body, which was solemnly laid out in the church.
Since then, a devoted order of priests has watched over his grave and church. Occasionally, "miracles" occur in the Church of Saint Rumoldus: tears appear on statues of saints, and candles suddenly light up near the shrine. Devotees travel from near and far to honor Saint Rumoldus.
